How To Make AI Software Recognise Your Talent
October 12, 2020

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in recruitment is on the rise. With more people working from home, businesses are rapidly adopting AI software to swiftly identify suitable candidates based on their skills and experience. For those seeking employment, the first and most important step to success is understanding how hiring algorithms work.

If you were recently recommended to us by an employer, we’re here to help you beat the system to ensure you get the job that you truly deserve. Here are some steps you can take to make AI software pick you out amongst a sea of talent.

Increase keywords

Too often, applicants fail to use the appropriate number of keywords. When creating your CV, you must include various words and phrases that the algorithm may be looking for. To determine which you should use, we recommend reading through a range of job descriptions to get an idea of the specific requirements. These may include industry-specific skills, hardware and software literacy, and certifications.

With this in mind, it must be noted that keyword stuffing (using as many keywords as possible in the hope of gaming the system) may cost you a job opportunity. So, only use relevant keywords – and do so sparingly.

Include key information

Artificial intelligence in recruitment, therefore, is essentially the modern version of keyword algorithms; as well as key phrases, it scans for job title progression, education, and a consistent work history. That’s why you should also include basic information in your CV, such as the month and year of every job role you have held, as well as past and current position titles, and company names.

While you may not feel comfortable specifying where you live, including your current town or city on your CV will enable AI software to determine your distance from the role you’re applying for. Even if you’re not right for a certain role due to location, you may be ‘rerouted’ to one that’s closer to home.

Use the appropriate language

Just as when applying for a job through more traditional means, it’s important that you carefully consider the language you use in your CV. As well as adapting language to match the job description, consider using industry vernacular to attract both the algorithm and the hiring manager.

Hiring algorithms look for buzzwords and industry-specific terms. In a similar way as you searched for keywords, we suggest scanning through job boards to determine the type of technical language used.

Format your CV appropriately

Before you apply for a job online using your current CV, you must check that it’s formatted appropriately. You’ll notice that the vast majority of employers request that you upload your document in a format such as DOC or PDF.

If an employer requests a specific format, it typically means that the AI software can only read those files. In this case, it is particularly important to comply. Unless you’re submitting a creative portfolio, you should also avoid using more decorative fonts and graphics that hiring technology cannot read or recognise.
